Super Sized Design Ideas for your Walls

I have been intending to write about incorporating big scale for high impact in interior design, for a while now. But when I saw Kristan Cunningham’s (of Design on A Dime, TV fame) Venice CA rental in the LA Times, I decided that sticking with the walls was more than enough material for this post. The ship painting in her dining room is bigger than any other element of the interior and stands up visually to all of her other collected furnishings and accessories. Every room needs a focus and if it’s not the view, and we hope it’s not the TV, then finding some art, or decorative wall treatment may provide that necessary ingredient.
Kristan ordered her piece from Surface View, a firm in the UK that has the license to reproduce pieces from British museums. Some of the offerings include architectural sections or facades which give the perception of increased depth if you can use them in a floor to ceiling size.

Undaunted by a lack of architectural detail in your space, you can add this photo of stone instead. I have to admit that I’m enough of an art snob to hesitate over these sweeping murals but here are some other possibilities that may find a way into your interior designs yet, so scroll on…

If you have access to some architectural salvage, you may come upon some old shutters, metal gates, carved doors or even large sized picture frames, any of which could become a focal point on a blank wall. Also if you repeat a small motif enough times, the pattern becomes the design element rather than the individual parts.

As for me, I’m considering a hand painted reproduction oil painting from Global Wholesale Art. It is a copy of Cezanne’s “Corner of the Quarry” and is available in seven sizes from 20″H x 24″W to 48″H x 72″W. Don’t ask me how they work out the change of proportion. But at least it has paint brush strokes on canvas, and if I put it in my bedroom no one but my very best friends will ever see it!
