Interior Design Styles--Wabi Sabi, Shabby Chic, and Design Psychology

Print PDF
Wabi Sabi, an ancient Chinese philosophy adapted by the Japanese and practiced by many Westerners today, presents an alternative way of living more than a way of decorating your home. However, you can adapt your interior and landscape design using Wabi Sabi principles for happiness.

"Wabi Sabi" (pronounced "wah-bee sah-bee") was formalized as the Zen Buddhism tea ceremony evolved. Zen Buddhism originated in India, traveled through China in the 6th Century, and to Japan in the 12th century. The ancient wisdom of Wabi Sabi practitioners helps today's busy home makers with interesting interior design ideas. Wabi Sabi interior design followers learn to relax, take time appreciate the beauty and simplicity of natural design, and to know that their home doesn't need perfection to bring joy, which compares to our research findings in residential Design Psychology.

Before you relate Wabi Sabi to Shabby Chic style, understand that the Wabi Sabi way of life starts with simplicity, whereas Shabby Chic interiors often fill spaces with a lot of interesting finds, which can end up with too much to care for and eye clutter, according to Design Psychology principles. This lesson of too much design detail, which stops the eye and makes you feel overwhelmed, became apparent to us when we moved from our expansive Victorian home into a smaller house and had to choose the more important furnishings from the treasures discovered over ten years of collecting, both in antique and thrift stores.

If you want to makeover your home for joyous living, consider Wabi Sabi restraints along with Design Psychology principles:

Simplify your life and home design.
When you choose the best from your treasures, keep those accessories that support positive memories, regardless of monetary value.

Take pleasure from natural beauty.
Choose design details with colors, patterns, and textures similar to those found in nature, which feel harmonious to people because they connect us to the earth.

Appreciate your home and furnishings, no matter how imperfect.
When you love your home, this love shines throughout and makes it easier for you to clean and maintain. Your positive attitude brings you encouragement to find beauty all around, inspiring fresh ideas for home makeover projects.

Wabi Sabi beliefs include the principles of incomplete and impermanent designs, which parallel the Design Psychology principle that your home needs to grow and change, to support your changing lifestyle and emotional needs.

In contrast to Wabi Sabi's use of modest and humble furnishings, Design Psychology appreciates the inherent beauty in all things. Enjoy the fruits of your hard work and don't feel guilty when mixing the humble with quality showpieces. I love my Italian Millifiore glass lamps sitting next to my Mexican Rose rock.

Like any good design theory, Wabi Sabi finds beauty in the unconventional. Your originality in design makes your home unique. Design Psychology practice avoids the use of furniture "groups" and prefers unique, individual pieces offering comfort. If you were tempted by a furniture set, such as matching sofa, love seat, and the three matching tables, don't worry; just know that additional pieces don't need to match perfectly and that blending styles and finishes makes unconventional, unique spaces.

Design Psychology supports fearless home makeovers, bold with colors to lend emotional support yet restrained, without overly-filled rooms, to provide backgrounds for people and harmonious living.

Similar to the Wabi Sabi tea ceremony, practice daily rituals in your home. Create a home to celebrate life, one full of tranquility and beauty. Choose your home interior design style to best support your happiness.

Top 5 Tips for Interior Design Success!

Print PDF
Interior design has often been the easiest form of self-expression. Somewhere in every person is an interior designer just waiting to jump out. This may seem unrealistic to some but most all forms of design are based on how we want our homes to feel. This brings along with it a picture of what our home is, what function it serves, and how we want to portray ourselves to others.

The decorating process remains one of the great mysteries of the average person. How do we create the home we want to invite others into? Many people have said that interior design is the process by which we connect with people, and connect with the world while staying safely within our own space. It is safe to say that through interior design, we connect with some energy, some force, and some thing that expresses who we are and how we want to live. And it is through this connecting process that we have the opportunity to use our homes to effect change in our lives.

If we choose, we can become more comfortable or more expressive. Through this process, we can show others how we like to live and invite them to share part of our lives. We can focus on comfort, style, and/or art, truthfully, anything we want to express.

Here are the five steps to finding your style as well as some tips to implementing these styles.

Start with a passion for your project and with these five steps and think about whom you are, you can show whom you are thru "your place" as you never thought possible.

Step 1: The decisions
Is your home filled with trinkets, gadgets, and dust catchers? That you don't need? Or are these things treasures, possessions that you cannot part with for all the tea in china? These items (typically bought for time saving) end up costing us precious space in our homes. We can free up space otherwise saved for these items or display them as they, showing who and what you are to the world!

For example, imagine how much space is tied up in the books we bought but have never read? If you're not going to read it, find another home for it. Donate to a library or give it to a friend who may well treasure it. A good rule of thumb is if you haven't used something in a year, you don't need it or want it.

If the book is treasure for it's beauty or worth then displaying it in a room would be much better than letting it collect dust in a box somewhere. We all need to make these decisions, love it or leave it!

Design tip #1: Most likely, it's on your list of things to, go thru "things", and has been there for months or even years. Sometimes we don't know something is unwanted because we have been putting up with it for so long and have gotten used to it. Like that pile of stuff in a basket by the sofa or a drawer in an old unused desk that you don't really need anymore.

So make sure to take care of the things to do list! A good way to do this is to stand back and think about all the things you own and if you are unsure if you use an item, place a dot sticker on it with the date. If you use that item within a year, remove the sticker. If you do not use the item within a year, find it a home somewhere where it will be used.

Step 2: Find your style
Create a clear idea of what it is you would like to portray of yourself. Perhaps you are a person into comfort and easy maintenance, or perhaps you are a creative individual who would like to use your home to highlight new projects, new relationships, or a new career.

Whatever your personality, begin now by narrowing down the specific style you will be comfortable living with. Remember, being specific is the key here. Make a list of qualities, draw a picture, cut pictures out of magazines do whatever you can to get as specific a picture as you can. Find things that inspire you.

Step 3: Assistance

The keyword here is ASK! Asking where someone got his or her ideas will not kill you! Look for ideas in the world around you. Sometimes we are afraid to ask where someone we admire shops for the beautiful things that fill their home, but if you admire someone's interior then let them know it!

Other kinds of collaboration can include asking for help to clean out your garage in order to build your new studio, asking friends to come over for a dinner party because you want to get a perspective on how your living space will be used and where people gather, or asking someone to look over your drawing and pictures, a new look into what you are trying to achieve can get some great ideas offered. You don't have to do it alone!

Step 4: Confidence
The number one attitude you should have is confidence. This can be achieved by realizing that interior design is something you cannot fail at, become you are going to live in it! If you are comfortable, you can be confident and enjoy it. So take a look at the ideas you are coming up with and whether or not you are keeping them to use. Take a look at your ideas, pictures and drawings. They're full of decisions you have made. Deciding what you really want gives a wonderful feeling. But don't take my word for it try it out!

Interior decorating tip #2: Many stores have wallpaper books with great images to go with the wallpapers. And magazines have ideas, too

Step 5: Take the first step
Start arranging and stepping back to see what you have done! Buy something you love and put it in the place of honor and work from there. Once you have de-cluttered and arranged just go for it! Anyone can do interior decoration. If you want to go by a rule, look in books and follow the steps. Many good interior-decorating books will tell you the difference between art deco and Elizabethan and most have steps you can follow. So you have many options and can get your home to be comfortable for you. So jump in and let your personality shine!

These five steps are designed to help you be more open to your own style and the inspiration that the world holds for you. If you work with these steps, you will be able to find a balance of comfort and design while avoiding some of the stresses, and find yourself in a real sense of home that you love. Good luck!

Using Inexpensive Glass Blocks to Interior Design

Print PDF

The utilisation of Glass blocks in interior design will be guaranteed to give any space a unique and stylish feel.Glass blocks can be used to maximise the impression of space and create an airy, open feel in the most cosy of areas by allowing natural light to flood in bathing the roomwith a warming and natural light source. This also gives a modern and impressionistic vibe in the most unlikely of places and will transform a dull, familiar space by rejuvenating and lightening the mood.

The greatest and most obvious property and asset of glass is its transparency. When considering a room you use in the morning for example the use of glass in east facing scenarios allows natural sunlight to illuminate the space and sweep through the room creating warmth. This has the added advantage of potentially reducing lighting requirements and costs during periods when you can use an eco-friendly natural resource as an alternative to artificial light sources.

The use of coloured glass in order to subtly complement the colour schemes will revolutionise the way your space appears without feeling overbearing and can allow the use of bold colours in small spaces without feeling constrictive and claustrophobic in the same way those vast expanses of paint, papering or hangings can. Mosaic and complementary colours can be used as expression of yourindividual artistic side and give the opportunity to customise any space using a medium that is inherently more subtle and delicate.

Another consideration when designing with this medium is the use of coloured glass to cast colour onto white or palewalls being aware that as the light changes through the day the colours through the glass playing on the walls will subtly alter giving different feel and moods to different times of day giving an ambient lighting effect. This is worth bearing in mind when considering the effect of colour spectrums meshing in any situation or placement.

One of the inherent properties of glass are its fantastic insulation and heat retention abilities which should be borne in mind and can be used as a way of lowering heating costs as a practical consideration in the design of any space. Yet again another green property that sets glass apart in an age increasingly concerned with environmental concerns.

Thus far the focus has been on the myriad spectrum of hues and shades available. Understandably when incorporating anything into a design this may be the first consideration; however another factor is size and shape.Like any design element there is no proscribed need to use uniform sized glass blocks, the use of mismatched sizing can create a more surreal or rustic effect depending on the placement and arrangement. The space used for the glass blocks is another shape to play with artistically and can be customised in a multitude of ways.

Remember with glass compared to other wall design opportunities and space creation techniques you can work in three dimensions not just one; giving limitless possibilities and potential for the use of glass blocks in any design space.

How to Pick a Great Interior Design School

Print PDF

The interior design industry depends on right choice of school to attend. Your clientele will definitely depend on the contacts you know, and the relationships you build in school with other prospective interior designers are fundamental to building a great career. However, the first thing to hurdle is your choice of school.

1. Focus

- Is it solely an interior design school?
- Does it offer other courses?
- Does the school participate in any interior design competition?
- Have they accomplished anything of reknown in the industry?
- Do the strengths of the school play to your strengths?

2. Alumni Accomplishments

- Have any reknown students come from this facility?
- Do they offer job placement opportunities?
- Do they have significant connections within the industry?
- Read professional reviews on the performance of interior design schools

3. Curriculum/Programs

You must assess whether the curriculum is relevant to you field of study. You may want to compare the curricula of different schools to see which offers the best form of education. It would also be wise to check the quality of the teaching staff at that school. Having established artists who teach at a interior design school is also an indication of a good training program.

4. Student to Teacher Ratio

- How big are the classes
- How many teachers and classes are available

5. Accreditation and Educational Standards

Accreditation means the school has passed a certain standards of educational quality. Accreditation is performed by the U.S. Department of Education. Interior design schools must be accredited to prove their level of competence. Check with the State Postsecondary School Licensing Bureau to see if the college you are investigating is accredited. Also, check National Approval and Accreditation for this concern.

6. Cost

Some people may proclaim that to obtain their education, they would spare no coin. Unfortunately, it also pays to be practical in your choice of interior design school. If the school you choose has a tuition rate that is beyond your financial capability, you might find yourself working unable to pursue your studies consistently due to the financial stress which may lead you to look for part-time work.

7. Scholarships

You might want to consider whether the design school you are looking at offers any scholarships. You also might want to know the terms to them too. Some schools offer scholarships based on academic performance. Some offer them based on interior design competitions they hold regularly.

Wall Decorations Make a Room Shine!

Print PDF

A big part of home interior decorating is determining what to use on your walls. You can mount pictures, posters, paintings or mirrors to bring out the decorative balance in your room. Whatever you decide to put up on your walls should complement you home interior decorating style. Choose your pieces carefully and mount then thoughtfully. Each piece you hang up should be fully appreciated.

Determining Location

When determining the height at which to hang your decoration, choose a height where the pictures or paintings are at the eye level for easy viewing. If you hang pictures to high or too low the image is distorted and will not be appreciated. Take into consideration the pieces relation to the furniture. A wall decoration can either make or break a piece of furniture. For example a huge mirror should not be hung over a small credenza.

Enhancing your Pictures

The right frame can play an important role in bringing out your pictures. A picture frame can easily be modified by painting its molding. Keep your picture and mirror frames clean. Illuminate your pictures with picture lights, increasing the desired impact. You can also use spot lighting for the same effect. Take also into consideration the paint color of your walls when choosing your wall decorations. Choose a paint color or wall decorations that complement your home interior decorating style.

Using posters instead of Pictures

Posters are affordable options for a wall decoration project. Purchase posters that match your home interior decorating style. Once you have decided on your posters, you need to first smooth the poster. Use a cool iron, this allows the corners to stop curling up. The poster can then be attached directly to the wall by using wall paper adhesive. To finish off your poster wall decoration consider painting over it with matte vanish. A poster can also be attached to a poster board or framed and mounted as your picture would.

Using Mirrors

Mirrors in home interior decorating add a feeling of larger space. Choosing the right mirrors is crucial. Mirrors are an inexpensive way to give a room a new look. Mirrors dramatically change the appearance of a room. A mirror brightens a room by reflecting the limited light and also gives the illusion of increased size of the room. Mirrors can be hung over an ugly spot on the wall or can even be used as a table top. Hanging a mirror requires the same hardware used to hang pictures. If hanging a large mirror drill in the nails. Use nails or screws that can support the weight of the mirror. When tightening the screws, use a thin piece of cardboard to determine how tight the screw is.

If you are seeking a new look for a room, change the location of your wall decorations. This will give your room a new look without having to spend money on new pictures or paint for the walls.
